Reviews:

  • Wine Advocate: The 2005 Mouton Rothschild will have to take a back seat to the prodigious 2006, but administrator Philippe Dalhuin deserves considerable credit for pushing Mouton to higher quality levels over recent years. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest mostly Merlot, the dark purple-hued 2005 exhibits a restrained but promising nose of cedar, tobacco leaf, creme de cassis, and toasty oak. Full-bodied, tannic, and extremely backward, with the vintage’s tell-tale acidity, it appears to be even more closed in the bottle than it was from barrel. It does possess a long finish and multilayered mouthfeel. This is an undeniably outstanding, yet restrained, shy wine for a Mouton Rothschild.
  • Wine Spectator: Lots of currants, berries and minerals and light toasted oak on the nose. Full-bodied and very refined, with lots of silky tannins and a long finish. Elegant and fine. But should be up with the rest of the first-growths. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Producer Information

Located in the village of Paulliac, Château Mouton Rothschild is a classified First Growth Bordeaux whose foundations in the market were laid by the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1924. Although the first bottles of Chateau were introduced only in 1924, this winery has had a long history in winemaking since 1853. This beautiful estate which spans over 90 hectares of vines to the northwest of Bordeaux is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The current owner of the estate is Philippine de Rothschild, the grandchild of Baron Philippe. The wines of Château Mouton Rothschild truly need no introduction as they are widely recognized as one of the world’s greatest wines. The Chateau Mouton Rothschild vineyard is mostly situated in a hillock called the “Plateau de Mouton” which is made up of gravel, suitable for vine cultivation. The gentle slopes of the hills favor natural drainage and natural sunlight that allow the growth of the best vines on these hillocks. The vines of this land with the support of the natural land topography and climatic factors give the plants elegant, powerful, richly tannic, and long-lived wines.
