Fortified Wine: 2012 | Quinta do Vesuvio | Vintage Port

The 2012 Quinta do Vesuvio is actually quite reserved for an infant Vesuvio with broody and introspective black fruit, cassis, orange essence, clear honey and cloves. It is well-defined but takes more coaxing than Dow’s Senhora da Ribeira.

The 2012 Quinta do Vesuvio is actually quite reserved for an infant Vesuvio with broody and introspective black fruit, cassis, orange essence, clear honey and cloves. It is well-defined but takes more coaxing than Dow’s Senhora da Ribeira. The palate is well-defined with fine tannins and a slightly grainy texture. Good weight here, perhaps more structure than the aforementioned Senhora, adorned with an animated black pepper and clove-driven finish.

  • Wine Advocate: The 2012 Quinta do Vesuvio is actually quite reserved for an infant Vesuvio with broody and introspective black fruit, cassis, orange essence, clear honey and cloves. It is well-defined but takes more coaxing than Dow’s Senhora da Ribeira. The palate is well-defined with fine tannins and a slightly grainy texture. Give this masculine Vesuvio at least four to five years in bottle.
  • Wine Spectator: Effusively fruity, offering luscious red plum, dark cherry and chocolate flavors that are well-integrated. Very suave and creamy as well, with a long finish filled with cocoa powder and Asian spiceProducer Information

Quinta do Vesuvio is a Portuguese wine estate high in the rugged, arid upper Douro, producing a range of table wines and Ports. It is owned by the Symington group of wineries alongside the likes of Graham’s, Warre’s and Dow’s.There are 133 hectares (329 acres) of vines at the quinta, that range from 425ft (130m) above sea level at the river’s edge to 1740ft (530m) at the top of the ridge. Being so far inland, the diurnal temperature variation is extreme, which means the grapes retain acidity as they ripen. In the winery, grape treading by foot still takes place, a traditional which dates back to the estate’s foundation in the early 19th Century. It takes approximately 50 people at least two hours to tread one lagar (a traditional granite, open vat used for grape fermentation). The Vesuvio wine range includes Douro DOC wines as well as Port produced from Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Amarela. The Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage is the standard Port offering, while Capela do Vesuvio is only released in tiny quantities in exceptional years.
