With an intense and brilliant garnet color, a dense and complex nose, the wines of Corton are rich, powerful and more complete than the little brother Aloxe-Corton. It is fleshy, racy and generous with excellent keeping potential combining power and finesse. Young, it remains on notes of spicy fruits, blackcurrant kirsch then evolves, as it ages, on aromas of undergrowth, truffles and leather.
Reviews:
- Vinous: The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a finely detailed bouquet with yellow flowers, orange pith and light crushed stone aromas. This is extremely well defined. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, taut and fresh with a very harmonious, gourmand-like finish. Lingering ginger notes on the finish complete this excellent Corton-Charlemagne.
- Burghound: Here too there is just enough post-bottling reduction to overshadow what appears to be ripe fruit. On the palate there is good size, weight and volume to the succulent, indeed almost plump, middle weight plus flavors that also exude a lovely bead of minerality on the sappy and youthfully austere finale. This is definitely relatively forward for a young CC and a wine that should be reasonably approachable earlier than usual.
Producer Information
Domaine Rapet Père et Fils is a Burgundy wine estate situated in the village of Pernand-Vergelesses. The family-owned domaine can trace its foundations back to 1765, and is today managed by Vincent Rapet. Since taking over the reins in the 1990s, Vincent Rapet has overseen the construction of a new winery in 2003, and has expanded the domaine’s vineyard holdings. The domaine now spans 18 hectares (44.5 acres) of land that encompasses three grand cru vineyard sites in Corton, and ten premier cru vineyard plots across the villages of Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses and Savigny-les-Beaune. Domaine Rapet produces three grand cru wines from plots in Corton, Corton Pougets and Corton-Charlemagne. The Corton-Charlemagne grand cru is the only white wine in this trio and is made from Chardonnay. After fermentation in 30 percent new oak barrels, the wine is aged on its lees and bottled after 12 months. The Pinot Noir grapes destined for the Corton Pougets and Corton-Charlemagne grand crus are fermented for approximately two weeks, aged in 40 percent new oak barrels and bottled using filtration. The domaine also produces a selection of village-level wines from vineyard holdings in Aloxe-Corton, Savigny-lès-Beaune and Pernand-Vergelesses. Unusually, Domaine Rapet Père et Fils produces a single Bourgogne Aligoté wine from its 1ha (2 acre) plot of Aligoté vines.
