White Wine: 2021 | Fritz Haag | Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese

This fine sundial shows Auslese with an extremely rich fruit, complemented by typical, smoky slate notes and honey spice. Dense and creamy on the palate, the sweetness is grandiosely played around by the acidity and together they dance through the mouth for a long time.

Reviews:

  • Wine Advocate: From the southeast-facing parts of the JSU, the 2021 Juffer-Sonnenuhr Auslese is intense but also refined and elegant on the coolish and lemony, even leafy but very delicate and savory nose. Lush and saline on the palate, this is a dense, savory and stimulating Auslese made to be enjoyed in magnums about 15 years from now. The acidity is fine and well embedded into the lush and generous but precise and elegant fruit. Two foudres produced. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork.
  • James Suckling: Smelling the nose of this wine is like walking into a room filled with vases of white flowers. Breathtaking concentration and purity of flavor on the incredibly precise palate. Normally a riesling Auslese is frankly sweet, but this aspect of the wine has been hidden, its sweetness at the back of the bottom drawer and forthrightly displays all its mineral beauty. Limited production. Drink or hold.

Producer Information

Fritz Haag is a wine producer located in Brauneberg in on the Mosel river. It produces a complete range of wines made from Riesling, from dry expressions to luscious botrytised wines. The well-known Erste Lage vineyards Brauneberger Juffer and Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr are synonymous with Fritz Haag, which is also known by the name Dusemonder Hof. In total, vineyard holdings cover 19 hectares (46 acres), and the vines are planted on Devonian slate soils on slopes of up to 80 degrees. This terroir is well-suited to Riesling, providing a cool, well-drained environment that allows for full ripening without sacrificing acidity. As a result, Fritz Haag wines are intense and balanced, and many of the top examples can be aged for decades. Today, Fritz Haag is headed by Oliver Haag who took over in 2005 after training at well-known estates such as Weingut Dönnhoff in the Nahe and Weingut Karthäuserhof in the Ruwer. Fritz Haag is a member of the VDP and produces a range of Prädikatswein with various sweetness levels..
