An extraordinary release from Gordon & MacPhail’s Private Collection, this right here is a 50 year old single malt from the Caol Ila Distillery – the oldest Caol Ila bottled to date. The whisky was distilled on Islay back in 1968 and left to mature in a single refill sherry hogshead for half of a century, before being bottled in 2018 at 52.5% ABV (which is particularly hefty for a 50 year old whisky). Only 199 bottles were produced, and each one comes alongside a really rather handsome wooden presentation box.
Caol Ila 1968 50 Year Old Private Collection Gordon & Macphail Single Malt Scotch Whisky| 700ML Tasting Notes
Nose: Dried fruit, black tea, ripe melon and camphor mingle on the nose.
Palate: There is delicate smoke here along with herbal notes and a dash of ocean breeze too. The palate is weighty with baked apples, Seville orange and mixed spice with Sherried oak on the tail end.
Finish: The finish is long and evolving with wild herbs, citrus and beach bonfire.
