Description
Manduria, in the heel of Italy, is widely regarded as the birthplace of the native Primitivo grape, officially recognised in the 1970s with the creation of a DOC. Produttori di Manduria has been producing wines in the region for over 40 years, demonstrating a deep respect and affection for Primitivo. While the estate also crafts whites from Fiano and Verdeca, it is with their Riserva Elegia that the full quality of their work is revealed. Made from old bush vines up to 50 years old, Elegia exemplifies intense dark berry fruit, elegant balsamic notes, and superb balance.
Viticulture
The Riserva Primitivo is sourced from 35 to 50 year-old vines, grown in both alberello (bush vine) and espallier training systems. Harvest takes place in mid-September, with yields averaging 60 quintals per hectare, ensuring concentration and intensity in the grapes.
Winemaking
Fermentation is temperature-controlled at 25°C and includes a two-week maceration to extract colour, tannin, and flavour. The wine is then matured for 12 months in French Allier oak barriques, a portion of which are new, imparting subtle oak complexity and structure.
Tasting Note
Elegia displays a bright ruby red colour with garnet highlights. The nose is intense and complex, with aromas of ripe raspberry, blackberry, and plum jam complemented by spicy, vanilla, and balsamic nuances. On the palate, it is dry, warm, and soft, with fine tannins and a persistent finish, all enhanced by the toasted oak character.
Food Matching
Ideal with rich foods, red meats, and game.
