This wine bats well above its “Rosso” designation, showing a stiff structural backbone that you would expect in a wine from the top Bolgheri designation at three or four times the price. It is just starting to show itself through that structure, with black and red fruit starting to peek out through fine grained tannins and oak that’s still out in front. I would age this for five years to start — don’t fear, it will seem like a real bargain when you look back. – Rich Cook

The 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Villa Donoratico is a terrific entry-level offering. A burst of dark cherry/plum fruit, cedar, tobacco, spice, new leather, blood orange and menthol come together to make a strong opening statement. The nose begins with black cherries and blackberries, but eventually notes of salt and pepper push to the front. Cherries remain on the palate, with chocolate adding to the rich sweetness, before a complex finish of warmth, spice and dusty chalk. Tannins cling while the acidity sings.
